It is recognised that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on student hardship, with more students at risk of facing increased costs or hardship as a result of the pandemic.
It is in recognition of these circumstances that the Department of Education (DfE) has allocated additional funding of £20 million to Higher Education providers to help to address student hardship during financial year 2020/2021. This funding has been made available by the DfE to recognise the particular impacts on individual students arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. DCG’s June share of this fund is approximately £5200 of which we will allocate fully to DCG HE students.
Similar to our previous round of hardship allocation, we are making this fund available to all Higher Education students at DCG. Particular focus and attention will be given to applicants who can demonstrate the following aspects of financial hardship and we ask you to consider these carefully:
1. Loss of employment
2. Extra travel expenses due to pandemic impact
3. Remote learning expenses (utilities)
4. IT resource for remote learning
5. Limited family support
There is no set item(s) that students are required to spend the hardship fund on, but it is presumed that the money will go towards a range of factors such as travel, contributing to the purchase of IT equipment or infrastructure and as a contribution to living expenses. DCG will not specify how the money is spent by the student, nor will DCG ask for receipts or evidence of how the money was utilised.
Students can apply for the fund from 8 June 2021 until 17 June 2021. Application decisions will be announced on 21 June 2021. The payments will be sent out by no later than 30 July 2021.
