Welcome to Your Studies!, under this category you'll find several different areas covering different parts of what expectations there may be for you from the college and how to go about ensuring you're aware of them so you can avoid any future issues or potential confusion should someone address a particular one of them.
"What is Turnitin?" some of you may be asking.
Turnitin, is one of the many great systems within Derby College as Turnitin is one of the things used to hand-in your assignments or coursework to, for those of you on courses for any of the campuses will find yourselves somewhat confused when trying to find it as for starting off; not knowing where it is located makes it all the more stressful for handing in assignments so knowing where to look will hopefully take away that stress so that you can make the most of your time at Derby College.
For starters, Moodle will be where you'll find plenty of the other services or systems from Derby College as some are located on this website rather than on Teams. Getting to it, Just click the dropdown arrow on the My Courses --> Turnitin for Students - Check your Work.
That's all you'll need to know for finding Turnitin, but the best way of describing what it does and how it helps you all is that it makes marking much easier which in turn - for those of you driven by feedback to improve, will find it extremely useful and a stress-free means of finding your feedback from Lecturers or teachers.
(Just know as well that it has plenty of countermeasures that protect you from having your work copied. So, as long as you ensure to hand-in your assignments or coursework in a timely manner, any work that holds a very high similarity to your own will be flagged and notify your lecturers. And know this: any who wish instead to try to skip putting in the work will instead have to deal with the aftermath of which is dependent upon the lecturers)
Basically Turnitin is your best friend for gathering feedback, suggestions and criticism as well as protecting your own work. In some cases, note that some pieces of coursework might only flag a similarity because you'll find that the structure is all the same for some of you on courses like Public Services, but the words you type or your answers will be the only thing to concern yourselves over (so triple check that all boxes are filled as it can be at times easy when doing coursework to get caught up in the swing of things whilst working away that you accidentally miss a section - and this will effect your final grading on that assignment.)
But, for some assignments there will be chances of resubmission just don't take that as a free pass to not try your best, instead take it as a further opportunity to improve upon your hardest pieces of work even further.
This page is for those of you who want to make the most of the facilities available here at college.
For your College campus, you will find that on the Moodle website in the Student Handbook the Your college allows you to see a map of your campus and where different facilities are. On your campus, you all will gain the right to access study areas like the Library; for those of you who work better in a quiet environment that also has plenty of resources around you. For any times when you're not able to attend on site, for whichever site you are on be it Broomfield, Joseph Wright or at the Roundhouse.
There are plenty of areas where you'll be able to set up to focus on your studies, as there are plugs around the campus in most social areas as well as classrooms - just know instead that these plugs are limited to official laptop chargers. So, make sure if you're not absolutely certain you'd be allowed to use your charger for your laptop - to ask either your lecturers or teachers.
The same kind of rules also apply to official study areas like the Library, that the same kinds of rules apply as well as the usual rules in a library but a little less restrictive: that a certain level of volume is expected of people and that it would be in best interests to remind ourselves of the environment around being one primarily for study, research or reading. So, anything short of a quiet volume would be highly inconsiderate and disrespectful to those who have chosen the Library of your campus as their study area.
On this page, you'll find all about Moodle and what will have been mentioned or talked about by your lecturers or teachers.
When you start at Derby College, after your induction and first day at Derby College - you will be told about Moodle, of which there is also an App for so there's always a way to access different resources. Regarding what Moodle is, Moodle is the website that we use at Derby College and that lays host to the vast multitude of Services, Support and other such resources that you as Students' of Derby College will want to make sure you make the most of. Some services that Moodle has, is like the Calendar, Turnitin and a few others that you can also find explained on our website here.
For Microsoft Office, installing and making use of the software that it comes with.
You will be talked through the process of your lecturers, but in the case they haven't or you aren't present when it is discussed. Then it involves your college account, college email and ensuring you're definitely trying to get office using your college email - as it allows you as students to get Office 365 for free for as long as you're a student of Derby College. So, just make sure to ask your leturers or teachers when you first start to help get set up and otherwise remember what was mentioned on here. As it is as straightforward as using your college email to claim your free Office 365.
For college laptops, for how to go about using them for those who might not have their own laptop, have forgotten to bring their own or simply want to make use of the college resources available to them as Students. You'll firstly, require both a valid college ID and also a valid Student Login as otherwise you will not be able to login and use the various applications that are available for use on the College Laptops.
It is down to you all as Students to use the College laptops appropriately as they are property of the college that is entirely just there for you as students to use should you need them, but not for purely just Entertainment Reasons , although they can be just note that where and when you use them if you've not plugged in headphones for any videos you may need to view then it's entirely dependent on the Library staff for what they wish to do. So, treat the Laptops and PC's with respect, considerate use.
Accessing these laptops specifically rather than the computers at college, does need you to use your college ID card as within the Library that some of these laptops are stored in, needs you to scan your ID. There are also still some laptop cases of college laptops in various classrooms which are locked, these of which you would have to ask you lecturer or teacher to use them.
This particular page is only more so relevant to those of you who are close to finishing current courses and are curious about the services available here from the College offerred to you for if choosing to continue into Higher Education with Derby College as we are also an affiliate of Derby University as well as connected with other Universities.
As previously mentioned, this page is more so regarding those of you who are just starting off at a Higher Education course with Derby College specifically, as this hub in itself provides a whole other variety of services and forms of support that becomes immediately accessible to you as HE students, that most other Universities might not benefit from or posess. To list a few of them being: HE Academic Coaches & Study Skills Resources, Library services (for those instances of finding sources for citation) and also Careers & Employability Advice.
One that I have not included, is the one which has been all the more accessible to all students for Inclusion & Support but know that this one still applies and is also on the HE 360 Hub for all of you to look into.
In this page, you'll get to know a little about the Calendar - specifically the one you'll all find on your Moodle home-page.
This calendar in particular is, more so, regarding you as students as a go to way to see or keep up to date with deadlines. As those of you on courses with coursework due in, will find that it's listed on a particular date and shall find that if you regularly check, will find the deadlines and due dates for assignments or pieces of coursework. So long as they remember to post it to the calendar, that is, so it'd still be a good idea to remind your lecturer or teacher to if you don't see it on the calendar.
